Okato

Okato is a 30 minute scenic drive from New Plymouth and offers a village/rural lifestyle.

Although a relatively small community, there is a much wider catchment  with the rural aspect of the area and with both Primary and Secondary Schooling, there is much to offer in this close-knit district.

There are many scenic aspects to the area, namely the Blue Rata Scenic Reserve and the Hangatahua (Stony) River, which enjoys beautiful clear swimming holes that are full of rainbow and brown trout, and a great place for a picnic.

Oakura

Oakura Beach is Taradise in Taranaki. There is so much to offer. The Beach is world renowned for its fantastic surf, good fishing and excellent swimming. There is of course, even warm sand and pools for the little ones when the tide goes out.

The beautiful beach walks from Oakura Beach, through to Ahu Ahu Beach and on to Weld Road Beach offer fabulous scenery all the way and of course, the surf is a dream for those who enjoy this form of sport. This area is one of the many gems of Taranaki.

Oakura provides a decile 10 Primary School, and is situated 12 kilometres from New Plymouth City.

A wonderful area to raise your family and so close to the central hub of New Plymouth. If you enjoy a passionate and close-knit community, Oakura is the place to be.

Omata

On the immediate outskirts of New Plymouth, Omata's Primary School is a recognised asset of Omata. Decile 8 and from Year 1 to Year 8, with approximately 150 students, children are welcomed at the school from further a field than the immediate area. The school enjoys an open door policy so many parents bring their children from the city.

For those working in the city, Omata is a very close transition for those wanting a more rural flavour to their living accommodation.

Whalers Gate

Fringing on rural, Whalers Gate is certainly a growth area and home to many architecturally designed properties. With the newer subdivisions off Barrett Road, many with delightful rural outlooks, this is a popular and friendly area.

Schooling to service the area would be Spotswood Primary and Spotswood Secondary schools, with Francis Douglas College a little further away. Devon Intermediate is mid way into the city.

Spotswood

West of the city centre and with a population of just over 2000 people, Spotswood is where we have co-ed schooling on both Primary and Secondary level.

Spotswood College has approximately 1020 students and it offers exciting opportunities for all students in academic, cultural and sporting areas. the core values of the school are:

Spotswood Primary  has a roll of approximately 300 and a staff of 14 teachers and 19 support staff.

This school provides a safe and caring learning environment for children in New Plymouth, where students are encouraged to set goals, work well with others and achieve their personal best.

Moturoa

Moturoa is where the beach is the predominant feature and amazing ocean views are enjoyed from elevated homes. It is also filled with the history of the turbulent oil industry.

Ngamotu Beach is a mere miniature of how it used to be some 140 years ago during the boom and bust prospecting for black gold.

The 'Nodding Neddy' beam pump, is one of the oldest oilfields in the world, still producing oil. This well was re-opened some 6 or 7 years ago and a modern day version of a beam pump was installed and oil was pumped out at a rate of around 5 barrels a day. Today the well is owned solely by Greymouth Petroleum and now flows naturally at around 3 barrels a day without the use of the pump. The crude oil is stored and taken away by truck every month.

Moturoa Primary School is co-ed for children between years 1 to 6. It has a roll of approximately 110. Since 2006, the school has accommodated two classes for Montessori so this makes Moturoa the first environ school in Taranaki

Blagdon

Blagdon is one of the smaller suburbs of New Plymouth, however it is such a short distance to the City, Ngamotu Beach, Port Taranaki and the ever popular Mt Paritutu.

Blagdon offers a small shopping centre comprising of a Supermarket, hairdressers, fish and chips shop, dairy, Draughtmen's Office and bakery.

Lynmouth

Lynmouth is the home of Devon Intermediate School. Recognised as a vibrant learning community and set in park like grounds, Devon has a history of providing age-appropriate quality learning opportunities for middle year students. The 'Sail' Attitude for Excellence is what Devon is based on:

Devon's specialty is its Academy Classes. The belief is that students learn best in an environment which builds talents, interest and learning styles, thus increasing students engagement.

Westown

Located to the southwest of central New Plymouth, Westown enjoys a population of approximately 3,400.

Home of both Westown Primary School, a co-ed school for years 1 to 6, with a roll of approximately 250 and the every-popular Francis Douglas College, which is a boys' secondary school years 7 to 13 with a roll of more than 760 students. This is an integrated Catholic School.

Taranaki Base Hospital is also in Westown, very centrally situated for the whole city and surrounding area.

Marfell

Located southwest and a short drive to the city centre, Marfell has a population of just over 2,000 people.

There is a co-ed Primary School for years 1 to 6. Marfell is a close knit community that works together for the betterment of its residents.

Hurdon

Hurdon is located in the upper area of Westown, with a population of approximately 1,500.

One of the earliest settlers of the area was Peter Elliot who arrived on the Amelia Thompson in 1841. He was responsible for establishing one of the first dairies in New Plymouth, known as the Hurdon Dairy and a School was also set up in his barn in 1853.

Nowawdays, Hurdon children predominantly attend Frankley School, co-ed from years 1 to 6 with a decile rate of 10 and a roll of approximately 250. The school was moved to its current site in 1969.

Barrett Lagoon is a popular walking area of the residents in Hurdon with its abundant birdlife.

Frankleigh Park

South of the city centre, this suburb was built around the site of the early settler Henry King's Farm - Woodleigh, hence Woodleigh Street. The population of some 3440 plus residents confirms the popularity of this location. Most streets in the area run off either Govett Avenue or Veale Road, the newest development  being Shelter Grove which offers some of the most beautiful and gracious homes in the city.

Frankleigh Park is home to Woodleigh Primary School, years 1 to 6 and a Shopping Centre. There are also two parks, Sutherland Park and Ferndale Park.

Vogeltown

Vogeltown spans a large area ranging from central city (lower Vogeltown) right up to semi-rural (upper Vogeltown). Carrington Street/Road is the main arterial route from the central city to the mountain.

The views of the mountain are outstanding as you drive to the outskirts of the city and if you keep going past the many lifestyle blocks on Carrington Road, you will have opportunity to visit both Pouakai Zoo and the internationally celebrated Pukeiti Rhododenron Park.

Brooklands

Situated on the southern edge of the city, a large part of Brooklands is park land, with Brooklands Park adjoining both Pukekura Park and the New Plymouth Racecourse.

in 1957, its natural amphitheatre and lake were concerted into the famous Bowl of Brooklands, one of New Zealand's finest outdoor concert venues and host to many international acts. It is also the venue for the WOMAD festival.

Brooklands Zoo and The Gables are also near the entrace to Brooklands Park.

Welbourn

Located just minutes away from the city centre, Welbourn is a short distance to the Racecourse, the Bowl of Brooklands, Pukekura Park and the many local beaches.

Welbourn Primary School, Highlands Intermediate and New Plymouth Boys' High School are all mainstays of this area.

Situated either side of Coronation Avenue, and the main arterial route south, Welbourn also boasts a small shopping area.

Merrilands

Merrilands is a top location in New Plymouth and predominately has homes ranging from the middle to top end with several exclusive subdivisions and many beautifully architecturally designed homes.

Schools are high decile, there being two primary schools. Merrilands Primary years 1 to 6, the zoned Mangorei School for years 1 to 8 and also New Plymouth Girls' High School in lower Merrilands

Merrilands Shopping Centre has recently had a substantial make-over and this offers ample parking for the community.

There is also the sports grounds of Te Mete Park and Merrilands, together with the Audrey Gale Reserve  with its picnic grounds and swimming holes, enhancing the Merrilands environment.

Highlands Park

Situated to the east of the main arterial route south and the upper parts of Mangorei Road, Highlands Park has mainly middle to upper end real estate along with a new subdivision. Education is taken care of as the area is zoned to Mangorei Primary School, years 1 to 8.

Within Highlands Park are the Tupare Gardens. The former home of Sir Russell & Lady Matthews, the gardens were gifted to the Queen Elizabeth Trust. Tupare incorporates  a Chapman Taylor home, park like grounds and a back drop of the Waiwhakaiho River .

Strandon

One of New Plymouth's most sought after locations, Standon is in very close proximity to the fabulous Coastal Walkway. It is also the home of both East End and Fitzroy Beaches. Real estate ranges from average beach homes to beautiful architecturally designed homes.

Fitzroy

Fitzroy is a very popular location in New Plymouth. With the Fitzroy Shopping Centre situated in a coastal environment, it is no wonder that this suburb is sought after by home buyers.

The suburb offers easy access to the coastal walkway, Golf Club, Surf Clubs and again there is a Primary School.

Glen Avon

Located on the edge of the City proper, and very close to Fitzroy, much of Glen Avon is still semi-rural. This is a rapid growth area, due predominately to the 'Valley' Mega Centre Development. Aside from shops such as Briscoes, Bendon, Rebel Sports, Mitre 10 Mega, Harvey Norman and many others, there is also a large Supermarket..

Bell Block

North of the City, Bell Block is growing by the minute. Huge residential growth as well as industrial growth is apparent wherever you look in the bustling community. With the new main arterial route, this has further enhance the appeal of Bell Block. Only minutes from the City, and with two Primary Schools, this suburb is going places.

Waitara

With a population of 6500, Waitara offers a wide range of shopping for the locals. Complete with Secondary and Primary Schooling and only 16 kilometres from New Plymouth, Waitara is the largest township in north Taranaki.

Rich in history, this was one of the first area to be settled by Maori, consequently Manukorihi Pa is set above the townhsip and features a magnificent Meeting House, Te Akoroa-a-Maui.

The Waitara River, which runs through the town, is popular for fishing, boating and white water rafting.

Urenui

A smallish settlement in the northern part of Taranaki, Urenui, with a population of approximately 430 people, is 13 kilometres from Waitara and 29 kilometres from New Plymouth.

A huge attraction of the area is the Urenui Beach Resort which is bounded by both the Tasman Sea and the Urenui River. There is also the Urenui Marae some 3 kilometres east of the village.

Urenui has a co-ed school, which caters for years 1 to 6.

Lepperton

Located between Waitara, Bell Block and Inglewood, Lepperton has a co-ed school which covers years 1 to 6 and has a roll of approximately 160 and decile rate of 9.

The area surrounding Lepperton incorporates Lifestyle Blocks, Horticultural activities, Wineries and farming. The population was 1917 in the 2006 census.

Egmont Village

Sitting proudly under Mount Egmont, Egmont Village has a population of approximately 485.

Located between Inglewood and New Plymouth and complete with Primary School which teaches from year 1 to 8, decile 9, Egmont Village is where you turn off at, to go directly to North Egmont.

Inglewood

With a population of more than 3,000, Inglewood is just 16 kilometres south east of New Plymouth.

This is a typical small country town, which serves a predominately dairy farming area. It is also famous for the renowned Fun Ho Toys, in fact there is a popular toy museum to support this.

Education is also well covered with Inglewood High School, years 9 to 15, Inglewood Primary and St Patrick's Schools years 1 to 8.
